The Principal York Hotel: Afternoon Tea in the Garden Room
The Principal York Hotel (formerly known as The Royal York) is a beautiful hotel, with absolutely stunning grounds, located just next to York train station. Recently I was invited to review the delicious afternoon tea, which is served in the very relaxing Garden Room. The gorgeous interior inside the hotel screams luxury and class, even the communal areas were relaxed but eye catching. I’ve experienced some really great food recently, such as the pre-opening of The Ivy York where I got to sample some incredible canapés.
As we arrived at the Garden Room, we were welcomed by the wonderfully attentive waitress, who then showed us to our table. We were seated next to the window and luckily, the sun was shining a bit on this specific day so the lovely, warm sun was shining on us. We were asked to choose which tea we would prefer from the tea-packed menu. You are spoilt for choice really, as they all sound so incredible.
White onion velouté
Severn and Wye smoked salmon, parsley, lavash crisps
Yorkshire Blue and chive tart
At The Principal York things are done a little differently. To start, I was surprised with a dish of savoury options, all perfectly presented on my plate. This I was not expecting! I’m usually not a fan of any kind of soup, but this was really tasty and super warming for my stomach, on a day in mid-January.
Free-range egg mayonnaise and watercress sandwich
Yorkshire ham and chutney sandwich
For the main event, the table was presented with this brilliant three-tiered afternoon tea display. I’m sure our eyeballs must have popped out of our heads, as we were really amazed. Beginning on the lowest tier, was a small selection of finger sandwiches. Due to the savoury starter, I was not complaining that the selection of sandwiches was smaller, compared to other afternoon teas I’ve had.
Trio of mini scones: plain, fruit, cherry and almond with raspberry jam and clotted cream
The middle tier included a selection of mini scones, with clotted cream and tempting jam. Usually I’m not a fan of scones, but I decided to have two of the plain scones. I topped these with the yummy clotted cream and jam, which melted in the mouth.
Chocolate and pistachio tart
Vanilla panna cotta
Mint chocolate macaron
Lemon meringue éclair
The final part of our divine afternoon tea was the desserts, which is why I saved the best until last. Panna cotta is one of my favourite desserts, ever, so I think my eyes lit up when I first spotted it. The desserts included the perfect variety, ensuring that there is something for everyone, no matter what your dessert preferences may be. By far though, my favourite food out of everything was the mint chocolate macaron. The flavours were heavenly and anything mint chocolate is going to be fabulous, in my opinion.
Thank you so much to The Principal York Hotel for inviting me along to review such a mouth watering afternoon tea. There are so many delightful options, you will be spoilt for choice! If you’re looking to self indulge or relax, this amazing afternoon tea will tick all the luxury and comfort boxes. The afternoon tea is available from £22.95 per person, which is absolutely worth every penny.
