The Fox & Roman, situated on Tadcaster Road in York, is named after the buildings former uses, The Fox Hotel which used to stable racehorses and a Roman grave which was found on the site in 1833. I was recently invited along to review the newly refurbished pub and tasty food, which I was excited for. I used to visit The Fox & Roman on many occasions during my years at college. The pub is situated in an easy to access location, with plenty of parking available for visitors.
The pub was recently renovated just before Christmas 2017, therefore the new décor and interiors are now beautiful, yet cosy. With the newly refurbished pub, owned by Vintage Inns, they wanted to provide guests with a cosy pub where people can enjoy their dinner, have a few drinks and relax. I love that The Fox & Roman is also dog friendly, meaning you can bring your four-legged friends along with you to the pub whilst you enjoy the food or some drinks.
Mum and I decided to both have the two/three course fixed priced menu deals. Mum opted for two courses, so starter and main. I decided to have all three courses, for the purpose of review, obviously! For our starter, we both had the Duo of pâté – coarse pork & Madeira pâté and duck liver parfait, served with Bramley apple butter, baby gherkins and rustic bread. I loved how the butter was presented around the edge of the incredible pâté.
Mum chose the Caesar salad (with a Salmon fillet), dressed lettuce with bacon lardons, anchovies and Gran Moravia cheese, served with stone-baked garlic flatbread. Her salad looked and tasted really fresh, all beautifully presented on the plate. For my main, I decided to have the delicious Salmon & spring onion fishcake in a kale crumb with broccoli, roasted vegetables and a basil dressing. I’m a bit of a fishcake addict, if I’m honest and this dish was mouth-watering. As you can see above, it was all displayed perfectly.
For my final course, the Hot drink and mini pudding seemed perfect for me as I didn’t want a huge dessert. You get to choose a hot drink, to enjoy along with one of these mini puddings: Crème caramel panna cotta, Treacle & pecan tart† (ve), Bramley apple pie (V), Eton mess (V) or the Belgian chocolate brownie (V). Therefore, I had the yummy hot chocolate as my drink choice and the Belgian chocolate brownie. I’m going to be honest, to say this brownie was called a “mini pudding”, it wasn’t very mini! Not that I’m complaining, as it tasted heavenly so I’m pleased there was plenty haha.
The Fox & Roman can be found in Dringhouses, just on the edge of York. The service was incredible, as the team were incredibly attentive and helpful. The food was brilliant, all freshly prepared and beautifully presented. Thank you so much to the team for inviting us along to review the food and refurbished establishment!
